Winter 2011/2 Previews

Just in time for Kurisumasu, ryuu_zer0 and I, with special guest Minami (A regular in our IRC channel) are proud to present the first of many Anime season previews! Continue reading to find out our recommendations for the Winter 2011/2 season.

The "Winter" list. Which will hopefully help cool off the summer heat.

Amagami SS+
Studio: AIC. Director: Kobayashi Tomoki.

Savage1: The season that the original series aired will always be remembered fondly. One of the better romance shows out there. Watch this for the Ai, Kaoru and Miya. (It also has awesome music).

ryuu_zer0: Based on a dating-sim and the sequel to the popular Amagami SS, which aired last year. It will consist of 2 episode arcs that follow on from the arcs in the first season. Expect a lot of great romance and delicious anime-original content. AI IS LOVE (and my waifu so gtfo).

Minami: I still hate ~~visual novel~~ eroge adaptations. It takes a lot to convince me to watch one (unless it aired this year because I watch almost everything that airs now). That said, I had never heard of an “omnibus” anime when I first saw Amagami. The idea sounded like it would fall flat on its face. Who really wants to watch a guy be a pussy so many times in a row? Amagami would be forgotten a few months after it ended. Nope. I was wrong. It was one of the few dating sim adaptations I’d even consider rewatching, let alone watching it the first time. I have high hopes for Amagami SS+.

Ano Natsu de Matteru
Studio: J.C. Staff. Director: Nagai Tatsuyuki.

Savage1: The Onegai Teacher, and Onegai Twins staff return for yet another romance show. The Onegai franchise will always be one of anime’s I hold close to my heart. I expect another fantastic romance anime. (If you haven’t watched any of the onegai franchise do so now.) DID I MENTION THAT THE DIRECTOR OF TORADORA IS DOING THIS. My expectations are high; I hope I don’t get let down.

ryuu_zer0: J.C. Staff have been very hit-and-miss of late, but with a completely original story directed by the same man who gave us the GREATEST LOVE STORY EVER TOLD, I have high expectations of this one.

Minami: The director from Toradora!, Railgun, and AnoHana? Animated by J.C. Staff? Hell yeah; get ready for an amazing love story with terrible Bluray mastering. Don’t expect the art itself to be that great either. However, the story will more than make up for it.

Another
Studio: P.A. Works. Director: Mizushima Tsutomu.

Savage1: ”In P.A. Works I trust.” Seriously: After True Tears I’ve thoroughly enjoyed almost every show made by this studio. The premise seems solid, and the original source material is a novel. Expect a well developed plot and character development.

ryuu_zer0: P.A. Works have produced some brilliant shows recently, including Hanasaku Iroha. Expect some eye-poppingly beautiful art, and great drama. Of all the shows this season, this is the one I’m looking forward to most.

Minami: These guys brought you True Tears, Hanasaku Iroha, Canaan, and Angel Beats! Haters gonna hate on that last one, but these were great shows. Expecting another hit from them.

Aquarion EVOL
Studio: SatelightX8-bit. Director: Yamamoto Yusuke.

Savage1: A show for the mecha fans, A little anime called Macross was made by the studios that do this anime. If you love fighting robots, give this franchise a shot.

ryuu_zer0: If you’ve watched the first Aquarion, then you’d probably know what to expect of the second installment. Mecha lovers will enjoy this one. Expect over-the-top battles and possibly some story to boot.

Minami: You don’t even need to watch the prequels to get into mecha animes. That’s one of the things I love about them. Fighting robots are a staple of anime and if you think you’re too good to watch them, you’re a hipster.

Area no Kishi
Studio: Shin-Ei Animation. Director: Ogura Hirofumi.

Savage1: I dislike sports animes. ryuu_zer0 wants to include it though so ::see below::.

ryuu_zer0: I’m not actually a big fan of sports anime either, but recently there have been some great ones, including Moshidora and Chihayafuru, so it may be worth giving this a try.

Minami: Moshidora wasn’t that great. I do agree with ryuu_zer0 on Chihayafuru. I’ll be giving this show two episodes to impress me. It probably will because I like sports animes.

BLACK★ROCK SHOOTER
Studio: Ordet & SANZIGEN Director: Yoshioka Shinobu.

Savage1: I remember when the OVA came out: Everyone was like THIS IS GONNA BE AMAZING. Nope.jpg. This T.V. Adaption will either be just as bad, or give us an actual ::plot::.

ryuu_zer0: BURAKKU ROKKU SHUUTAAAAAAAA doko e itta noooooo? kikoemasu kaaaaaaaaa? MIKU + SUPERCELL LOVE <3

Minami: I remember watching the OVA :smirk: It made no sense at all. Will this series clear up anything? Considering that it’s based on a line of toys, I don’t think so. The art will still be great though, if the OVA was any kind of indicator.

Brave 10
Studio: Studio Sakimakura. Director: Sayama Kiyoko.

Savage1: I haven’t really watched this type of anime since Basilisk and Sword of the Stranger. Going to give the genre another shot because the Winter season is making me feel nostalgic. Expect lots of awesome fighting and maybe some dorama.

ryuu_zer0: An ordinary 10 year old boy named Ben stumbles upon an alien watch called the Omnitrix that gives him the power to transform into…wait wrong show.

Minami: Every season there’s at least one anime based on old legends about the Warring States Period in Japan. And I watch them every time because they’re awesome.

Daily Lives of High School Boys
Studio: Sunrise. Director: Takamatsu Shinji.

Savage1: Slice of life by Sunrise… What could ::possibly:: go wrong?

ryuu_zer0: K-On with guys. If any of you watched Kimi to Boku last season (I certainly didn’t) you’d probably know what to expect. Expect more comedy than BL vibes, though.

Minami: More like Nichijou with guys. It’s a shounen manga so don’t expect any BL vibes at all.

Gundam Seed Remaster
Studio: Sunrise. Director: Fukuda Mitsuo.

Savage1: Seed is the best Gundam timeline. This is a Seed HD remaster. No. This is not the horror that was Seed Destiny. It’s legit, and everyone should watch it.

ryuu_zer0: Gundam. SEED. HD. ‘Nuff said.

Minami: While I’m not going to say that SEED was the best timeline, I do consider it one of the best. HD remaster? Hell yeah.

High School DxD
Studio: TNK. Director: Yanagisawa Tetsuya.

Savage1: This season’s obligatory harem show. Saabisu~saabisu~! It’s also going to be screened by AT-X, which has limited censoring for those of you who love Zettai Ryouiki~!

ryuu_zer0: Expect breasts. Lots of breasts. And probably loads of gore too. If you’re into this kind of thing, it might be worth waiting for uncensored Blu-rays to get full enjoyment out of this.

Minami: This is a light novel adaptation. Don’t let Savage1′s description of this as the “obligatory harem show” fool you. I had the same suspicions about Cube x Cursed x Curious but that show turned out to be excellent. The music sounds great as well. Haters gonna hate.

Inu x Boku SS
Studio: David Production. Director: Tsuda Naokatsu.

Savage1: Think Black Butler without the BL, and with more loli. Made by the upcoming studio david production (who did Ben-To last season), this show will either be another mediocre loli show, or something nice.

ryuu_zer0: inb4 the loli is actually a guy and it becomes a BL show.

Minami: I actually enjoyed Ben-Ten fighting aliens all the time, so if the studio’s getting involved in another show, it’s definitely going on my watch list.

Kyousougiga
Studio: Toei Animation. Director: Matsumoto Rie.

Savage1: This show is going to be a ONA (Original Network Animation; think Xam’d: Lost Memories). The premise seems interesting, so this will be one to watch out for.

ryuu_zer0: What it actually reminds me of, is a Summer Wars x Alice in Wonderland cross. Looks like it has potential.

Minami: The ONA that came out this month was actually a teaser. The full series comes out in March. Looks like a bit of Madoka and Ghostbusters to me.

Natsume Yuujinchou Shi
Studio: Brains Base. Director: Omori Takahiro.

Savage1: You should give this franchise a shot to see if you like it or not. I sadly was the latter.

ryuu_zer0: Continues on from the third season. Natsume Yuujinchou is, in my opinon, a gem of an anime that will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between. Needless to say, I will definitely be watching this one.

Minami: I honestly don’t have an opinion. I missed out on the first season, not about to catch up with it because I’ve built up a huge backlog of other animes.

Nisemonogatari
Studio: SHAFT. Director: Shinbo Akiyuki.

Savage1: Bakemonogatari was awesome. This is Bakemonogatari with two sisters. I don’t know what can get better than this. Going into this expecting the same amount of awesome. Why does Araragi get Senjougahara as well as two awesome imoutos~.

ryuu_zer0: SHAFT can do no wrong, it seems, and they’re definitely cashing in on the -monogatari franchise. Sequel to Bakemonogatari, expect more of their quirky art style and head tilts galore.

Minami: This is the next installment in the Bakemonogatari franchise. The first show focused on Hitagi and the other girls Araragi met, but Nisemonogatari will center around his two younger sisters. Nishio Ishin’s writing? Check. Japanese puns none of you will understand? Check. Subtle tsundere humor? I hope so.

Papa no Iu koto o Kikinasai
Studio: Feel. Director: Kawasaki Itsuro.

Savage1: There is one show about lolis that is a masterpiece. That show is Astarotte no Omocha (and maybe Usagi Drop as well). This show will either turn out as awesome as AstarotteXAsuhariet, or get thrown into the pit of mediocre loli fanservice shows. I do think that this might become something amazing, I just hope it doesn’t turn into another Onii-chan no Koto nanka Zenzen Suki Janain Dakara ne!!

ryuu_zer0: Anime with premises like this always end up being ticking time bombs. You never know when it will degrade into random panty shots and lose all semblance of a plot. However, this looks like it has potential for some good laughs, and the art looks superb.

Minami: There won’t be any incest, if that’s what you sickos wanted. The girls actually hate the protagonist, unlike Ochinko. I mean, what else would you feel if you suddenly had to live with a relative you’ve never met? Unless you’re 4, you’re going to feel like everything’s being taken away from you. If anything, it might turn out like Astarotte no Omocha: a show about family bonds growing stronger. I know what you’re thinking.

Recorder to Randoseru
Studio: Seven. Director: Kimura Hiroshi.

Savage1: The show seems interesting, but it’s based on a 4-koma manga; so ::plot::. Will be watching this one with interest and see if it turns out to be anything amazing.

ryuu_zer0: The premise seems pretty strange, but it may be worth giving this one a shot. The idea of an elder sister/younger brother relationship being turned upside down does kinda intrigue me, and it has an all-star cast featuring names like Kugimiya Rie and Hirano Aya.

Minami: Don’t throw this out just because it’s a 4-koma. B-Gata H-Kei was a masterpiece.

Senhime Zesshou Symphogear
Studio: Encourage Films. Director: Itou Tatsufumi

Savage1: My first thought: Strike Witches without the loli. Who in their right mind would want to watch Strike Witches without the loli; that’s like watching gundam without the robots O_o. But, I’m going to give this a shot anyway just to see if it might actually turn out to be fun. Oh and THE GODDESS MIZUKI NANA.

ryuu_zer0: At first this looks like another fanservice-laden harem show, but it has the potential to be much more. With Satelight involved, and names such as Takayama Minami and Mizuki Nana, this could be a great show after all. One thing is for sure though, expect a god-tier soundtrack

Minami: You know what? I loved Freezing. Kickass hotties saving the world sounds like a winning formula to me. Also, all-star casts don’t necessarily mean a good show. Exhibit A: Infinite Stratos. Yeah, expect a good soundtrack, but the reason I can recommend this is because I know what to expect from anime, so bad anime doesn’t leave me disappointed.

Smile Precure!
Studio: Toei Animation. Director: Unknown.

Savage1: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha will always be my favourite Mahou Shoujo. Smile Precure! is yet another anime in the Precure franchise. You will probably be watching it if you’ve seen the previous series; and if you haven’t give it a shot if you’re interested in the mahou shoujo genre; this show has good music.

ryuu_zer0: ┐(￣ー￣)┌

Minami: If you don’t want to get into this show, you can always buy the soundtrack later. If you haven’t seen Nanoha yet, pass on this one and go watch that first.

Tantei Opera Milky Homes 2
Studio: J.C. Staff. Director: Moriwaki Makoto.

Savage1: Chen, the club’s treasurer will probably never forgive me if I don’t include this. Loli detectives + J.C. Staff + good music = this show. You should give Milky Holmes a shot if you haven’t to see if you like it. It’s ::interesting:: to say the least.

ryuu_zer0: What Savage1 said.

Minami: Another sequel. You’ll know if you want to watch it if you’ve seen the first. That said, go for it if you have the free time.

Zero no Tsukaima F
Studio: J.C. Staff. Director: Iwasaki Yoshiaki.

Savage1: These past two seasons have seen a return of many of my favourite franchises from the 04-08 era. Back in the day I used to watch Shakugan no Shana, and Zero no Tsukaima religiously. Many people new to the franchise will probably be thinking >kugi rie >loli show >toradora is the greatest thing ever; everything else sucks. I won’t spoil anything in the franchise, but rest assured that Zero no Tsukaima has one of the better love stories. When this was announced I was like: I SAY YES ZUTTOOOOOOOOOOO~!

ryuu_zer0: Yeah, I haven’t watched ZnT or Shana. Come at me.

Minami: I remember when I first came across this series. I went to Eclipse’s site every week for Code Geass R2 and noticed Princess no Rondo on there as well. I decided to check it out, and the first five minutes turned out to be Saito getting it on. I knew right then and there that I had to watch this whole series. Since this is the fourth installment in the series, this is a “for fans” anime. HOWEVER, if you’re not a fan yet, I will look down upon you until you’ve marathoned this franchise, like ryuu_zer0 trolololol

Arrietty Competition and Other Ramblings.

Today I present a very special surprise to all UWAnime, and affiliate members. Yes, that’s right, the “special surprise” mentioned in this post has finally come to fruition!

We have 10 in-season double passes to give away for the Perth Screening of Arrietty (Other names it has been known by are: The Borrower’s Arrietty, and Karigurashi no Arrietty). About the Movie

This is a story of a family of “little” people.
Beneath the floorboards of a sprawling mansion set in a magical,
overgrown garden in the suburbs of Tokyo, tiny 14-year-old Arrietty
lives with her equally tiny parents. The house is occupied by two old
ladies, who are absolutely unaware of the existence of their miniature
tenants. Arrietty and her family live by “borrowing.” Everything they
have, they borrow or make from the things they have borrowed.
Essentials like gas, water and food. Tables, chairs, cooking utensils.
And treats – a sugar cube here, a scrap of material there. But only a
little each time, so the ladies do not notice. A 12-year-old boy, Sho,
moves into the mansion while he waits for urgent medical treatment in
the city. Arrietty’s parents have always warned her: “Never let humans
see you.” Once seen, little people always have to move on. But the
adventurous Arrietty doesn’t listen, and Sho discovers her.

The two begin to confide in each other and, before long, a friendship
begins to blossom…

Nostalgic Ramblings from the UWAnime President

Anime movies have normally been given little coverage in Australia, with good reason, as foreign movies (yes, unfortunately that includes Anime) are not usually well received by a Western Audience. There are notable exceptions to this rule of course, however it simply is not worth the risk. This post will (hopefully) give you all an insight into all aspects of Anime films, from the hidden gems that have never made it to the big screen, to the blockbuster hits that have had a huge impact on the Western World.

The Hidden Gem

I could go on and on about why Kara no Kyoukai is amazing, and how Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha the Movie First is an example of how a franchise is a product of fan devotion. However, this category is devoted to the film that should be loved by western audiences, but just isn’t.

These films need just that little bit of STARRRLIIIGGHHTTT BREAKERRRRR!

Satoshi Kon. This Director doesn’t make you cry a river like Makoto Shinkai does, nor does he take you on an epic journey like Hayao Miyazaki. Instead, he is able to blow your mind, and take you on an emotional rollercoaster with what can simply be described as Masterpiece. Perfect Blue straps you into the chair, padlocks the chair to the floor, throws away the key, and launches you into space. It is one of those movies that you watch a second time immediately after to catch everything that you missed. The movie details the life of Mima Kirigoe, an idol working for the group ‘CHAM!’. However, as she grows more popular she gets her own personal stalker (yay!), and as her friends are murdered, she slowly loses the ability to distinguish reality from fantasy. If there was one film I would want to watch before the end of the world, this would be it. (read: There is a reason why I want to watch this film before I die… I wonder why ).

To this date, there has been no other film that has made me think as much as this one.

The Almost Mainstream

This category is a tough one, as there are films like the Rebuild of Evangelion that have a huge cult following of cult Anime fans, but haven’t really broken into the core Western Audience. To decide on a film that would best fit this category I looked at the films which I think haven’t quite broken through to reach wider Western Audiences.

These films dare to dream.

The power to travel through time… Leaping into the past, and changing things to make the present easier on oneself. However, changing the past can lead to drastic consequences. No, this isn’t sending D-mails because the Steins;Gate told you to. This is Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo aka The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. There are few movies that have had a huge emotional impact on me. This film is one of them. The film follows the life of Makoto Konno, who ‘leaps’ back through time to change the past for her own good. However, as we all know time travel sucks, and eventually she realises she has a huge impact on those she cares about. What ensues is a beautiful movie about the aspects of human nature, and the trials and tribulations of adolescence. This film is good; watch it.

The ‘Critically Acclaimed Everywhere’

Loved by Japanese and Western Audiences, nothing much can be said about these films. The biggest culprit is Studio Ghibli, who have been able to create worlds that suck you in, and never let you go. Studio Ghibli is the ‘Disney’ of Japan, proving time, and time again that films are able to take the reader on an epic journey.

Showing Western Audiences that Japanese Anime can be just as 'Moving' as Disney.

There is one movie that I watched as a child, and that I will always remember as the movie which showed me just how awesome Anime Movies can be. This movie Spirited me Away to the land of spirits, and made me want to return. Spirited Away details the journey of Chihiro Ogino who is trapped in the land of spirits, and must find the courage within herself to save her parents, and return home. There is a reason why Walt Disney Pictures approaches Director Miyazaki to bring this film to Western Audiences. Winning the Avademy Awad for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards, grossing over $274 million worldwide. I suspect many of you have seen this film, if you haven’t, stop reading this post and do so now. I was going to give you a screencap of Spirited Away, but I think the Japanese Walt Disney; Hayao Miyazaki, would be more fitting.

Genius.

Ben-To

Studio: David Production. Director: Itagaki Shin.

A faithful depiction of university life.

Savage1: Lots of fanservice, and the first opening song was ridiculously awesome. A really fun anime to watch, and I can see why the Light Novels were so successful. This anime is what a poor university student’s life is.

ryuu_zer0: Quite simply, this is the best comedy anime this season. Every episode had me in stitches with absurd antics and hilarious characters. The OP song is great too.

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukinai

Studio: AIC Build. Director: Saito Hisashi.

They apparently don't have any friends.

Savage1: Minami, the leader of our Light Novel translation group, and regular in #uwanime, (stay tuned for releases soon!) recommended the novels and told me I would find this show amazing. I find this show amazing. It reminds me of Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai. Don’t expect much plot progression, but rather a nice comedy containing almost every trope imaginable. I watch this for the laughs and Kobato. Kobato is so fabulous.

Why do people watch this?

ryuu_zer0: Dont bother watching this unless you’re really desperate for fanservice. No plot whatsoever and the characters are more annoying than arousing. Silver Link should just stick to Baka Test.

You wouldn’t be able to see anything, it would just be a lot of panels with random colour, scribbles and 9001 signs everywhere.

Carnival Phantasm

Studio: LARC. Director: Seiji Kishi

Gilgamesh says this anime is full of GAR.

Savage1: An OVA that I would only recommend to type moon fans. The Saber, Illya, and Rin episodes will make you go HNNNNNNGGGGGHHHHH. Offers a unique insight into the nasuverse, and the flamboyant portrayal of character relationships.

ryuu_zer0: This isn’t even this season in any conceivable way, so I dont know why we’re reviewing it. But i guess what the president says goes. These OVAs are very funny, but to really get the most out of it you need to be aquainted with the Type-Moon universe. And no, watching the Fate/Stay Night anime doesn’t quite cut it, I’m afraid.

Fate/Zero

Studio: ufotable. Director: Aoki Ei

I ask of you. Are you my master?

Savage1: Play the Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel to get the most out of this one. A prequel to the original Fate/Stay Night series; ufotable shows Studio DEEN how it’s done. It could still be enjoyable without prior understanding of the nasuverse, unlike Shakugan no Shana which throws technical terms at you every 5 seconds. Fantastic visuals, use of 2D painting over CG models, and a high budget makes this almost as good looking as the critically acclaimed Kara No Kyoukai Movies (but not as good as dem BDs trololol). Oh, and did I mention Yuki Kajiura does the music?

ryuu_zer0: Contrary to popular belief you DON’T need to play the F/SN visual novel to enjoy this anime. The animation quality is eye-poppingly good, and the plot is intriguing too. This is a very solid anime overall. Highly recommended.

Guilty Crown

Studio: Production I.G. Director: Araki Tetsuro

This anime is like this image. It's walking towards awesomeness, but hasn't quite got it thus far.

Savage1: Before the first episode was released, everyone on /a/ was hailing it as the new Code Geass. Having watched it however i can say that I watch this show for 3 things: The music, Inori, and Ayana Taketatsu’s voice. Not that this show is bad; it just didn’t meet the hype surrounding it, and leaves you wanting more. The show is two-cour, so there is still a lot that can happen within the one season break to make this anime exceptional.

ryuu_zer0: I thought this show had the most potential after episode 1, but it kinda fell away after that. I expected brilliant writing and execution from the spiritual successor to Code Geass, and what I got was a constant stream of cliche after cliche and unimaginitve plot progression. That said, I still enjoy watching this show, and it’s still pretty decent overall. I still have hope that it will get much better in the second half.

Also, the soundtrack is absolutely amazing. supercell, have my babies.

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!

Studio: Lerche. Director: Motonaga Keitaro.

Pick a girl. Any girl.

Savage1: This show reminds me of the old days, back in 05-09 when I devoured harem shows after harem shows. Nothing really amazing, and lots of fanservice, but it’s watchable. Expect a non-commital harem end. But I’ll fill up the rest of the paragraph by saying the Oneechan is the best!

Mawaru Penguindrum

Studio: Brains Base. Director: Ikuhara Kunihiko

This show is FABULOUS MAX.

Savage1: From the director of Revolutionary Girl Utena, comes an anime that gets better and better each week. Coupled with two amazing opening songs, a fantastic plot and direction. Mawaru Penguindrum is highly recommended as one of the more solid anime’s of 2011. (Oh my god the plot twists).

ryuu_zer0: This anime is something completely different. It has a slightly convoluted, but engaging storyline, and it’s bursting with originality. Combined with solid artwork and musical score, it’s a definite recommendation.

Mirai Nikki

Studio: asread. Director: Hosoda Naoto. Licensed by Madman.

This anime scares me.

Savage1: I refuse to watch this until it ends, and people say it’s good. Not a big fan of Yandere.

ryuu_zer0: Ah, this is a tough one to review. Mainly because it’s 2 cour and I’ve only seen 7 episodes of it. But so far, it does look like it has potential. The pacing is great and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. However, it does suffer from some typical shounen-anime faults. Overall it’s definitely one of the better animes this season. Yuno is terrifyingly fabulous.

Persona 4: The Animation

Studio: AIC A.S.T.A Director: Kishi Seiji. Licensed by Madman.

Savage1: Never liked the games, not going to watch the anime; see ryuu_zer0′s review.

ryuu_zer0: This show is a bit of a strange one. It follows the game storyline quite faithfully, so fans of it will probably enjoy this. From an outsider’s perspective, it has a certain quirky charm that you either like or hate with a passion. For the record, I was the among the former.

Shakugan no Shana III (Final)

Studio: J.C Staff. Director: Watanabe Takashi.

Don't make Shana cry. Watch this anime.

Savage1: If you like the Shana franchise, then you probably are going to watch this. I highly recommend giving the first season a shot if you haven’t otherwise. Watching this final season reminds me of the times when I was downloading chinese rmvb’s on dial up. Shana is awesome. You should watch this. The final season follows the Light Novels pretty well, and hopefully it will reach the same conclusion.

ryuu_zer0: Kugi Rie sucks (except for Taiga).

Tamayura ~hitotose~

Studio: TYO Animations. Director: Junichi Satou

Simple and Clean.

Savage1: This is exactly how slice of life should be done. I highly recommend watching the prequel OVAs: Tamayura, as well. No random fanservice and ::plot:: thrown in your face. This anime serves itself on a gold platter, with all the sides.

ryuu_zer0: A gem of an anime. The characters are adorable, and the whole show has a very relaxing feel to it. This is slice of life done the right way, and it’s probably my favourite show of the season. Now, if only the studio didn’t suck so much at mastering…

The Idolm@ster Xenoglossia

Studio: A-1 Pictures. Directors: Touko Takao, Atsushi Nishigori

Cute idol girls doing cute idol girl things.

Savage1: This isn’t the horrible anime that Xenoglossia was, but rather a relatively faithful adaption of an awesome xbox360 (and now PS3) game. With a huge number of quality songs, good character story arcs, and solid animation, The Idolm@ster is an anime I highly recommend to people new to the franchise.

ryuu_zer0: Idolm@ster is exactly what you’d expect and nothing more. It’s a series that may lead to multiple deaths-by-moe, but underneath it doesn’t really have much substance. Not that you need any to appreciate the music and overall cuteness of the show. tl;dr if you’re in the mood for a fluffy moe-fest, watch im@s.

This is my face when I watch this anime.

Savage1: The first season was average. When the second season was announced, I thought to myself: “Awesome, now we get plot.” Astushi. I am disappoint. The series has devolved into the constant repetition if Inami’s “problem”. Not that it’s a bad thing, it just feels like the endless eight again. Watch it if you have time, and have watched the first season.

Stuff we haven’t really watched, but have been recommended.

Chihayafuru

Studio: Madhouse. Director: Asaka Morio.

Savage1: Eggmun dubs this “the best anime this season”. I might watch it eventually; and if an episode ever told the viewer to “jump off a cliff” I would immediately call search and rescue.

Kimi to Boku

Studio: J.C Staff. Director: Kanbe Mamoru

Savage1: Eggmun, a regular in #uwanime, and a translator for our LN group, says this is one of the best shows this season. And since he apparently has superior taste to all of us, I think we should take his word for it. I, on the other hand have only watched the OP, and it’s pretty good, so go figure.

ryuu_zer0: But seriously, this is a BL show and Eggmun was the only one that watched it.

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon

Studio: Sunrise. Director: Ono Manabu. Licensed by Madman.

Savage1: I haven’t actually watched this, but lots of people love this show (read: commie). So It’s on my “going to watch because people told me to watch it list”. You should add it to your list too.

ryuu_zer0: No this show sucks, don’t watch it. Join #uwanime and Eggmun will tell you why.

Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam

Studio: GONZO. Director: Chigira Koichi.

Savage1: People in the Clubroom have convinced me to watch this and the original Last Exile anime. From what I’ve seen, it’s really solid, and should be given a shot.

ryuu_zer0: Another two-cour show, so it’s kind of unfair to review it at this stage.

Mashiro-Iro Symphony

Studio: Manglobe. Director: Suganuma Eiji

Savage1: After watching Shuffle! and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien the only thing that will make me watch an Anime like Mashiro-iro is the promise of Sora in Yosuga no Sora. Currently waiting on Icy’s (another member in #uwanime) final verdict, but the general consensus has been: Watch it if you have nothing else to watch.

ryuu_zer0: MOAR RIBBONS

Shinryaku? Ika Musume

Studio: Diomedea. Director: Yamamoto Yasutaka. Licensed by Madman.

Savage1: There is always that one guy in the UWAnime Clubroom that wants to watch this. To me it’s a show that thrusts squid loli in your face and forces you to swallow. Might (read: probably won’t) give this a shot, but hey, there is a semi fan base for this show, so why not try it out?

ryuu_zer0: No review needed. Ika fans will know exactly what to expect, and that’s exactly what this show delivers.

Un-Go

Studio: Bones. Director: Mizushima Seiji.

Savage1: Bones is the studio behind this. /a/ like it, however after consecutive seasons of GOSICK and Kamisama no Memochou, I’m taking a break from detective shows for a bit. Lets hope ryuu watched this or else he’ll get mad :>.

ryuu_zer0: I never know what to expect from Bones any more so I’m not even going to try and comment on this until I’ve watched it.

UWAnime AGM [31st October]

UWAnime’s Annual General Meeting is coming up.
If you are interested in getting involved or want to see changes in the way the club is run, you can nominate yourself to be a part of next year’s the committee!
The positions available are President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Ordinary Committee Member.
